Nirvana: The Years of Cobain
Everyone’s heard the name of one of the greatest rock bands which ever existed: Nirvana. This band was formed by the singer and guitarist, Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic, the bassist in 1987 in Washington. Now they had a lot of drummers and the one which lasts the longest was Dave Grohl who joined Nirvana in 1990.
If you know a little bit about the band you will know that the era of Kurt Cobain was the one where the band had flourished to its fullest with hits like “Smells like teen spirit”. It is with this song that the band switched over to a form of music which is called grunge. Nirvana was basically considered the “flagship band” when it came to Generation X. now the era of Nirvana had finally ended in 1994 with Cobain’s death.
Now the first drummer of the band was Aaron Burckhard. The sound of the band as described by Cobain was “a Gang of Four and even Scratch Acid ripoff”. After Buckhard there was a temporary drummer who was replaced by Dave Foster. At first Nirvana had a lot of different names like Skid Row, Ted Ed Fred and Pen Cap Chew. After all these names, Nirvana was finally settled on. After their first performance which was in March they got a new drummer called Chad Channing. The bands first single was tilled Love Buzz.
In 1989 the band released their first ever album titled Bleach. As the band was recording the album which was supposed to be a follow up to their first album, Channing had left Nirvana and Dan Peters replaced him and helped with the recording of “Silver”. After a few weeks Dave Grohl became the drummer and the legendary Nirvana as we know it today was formed.
The first major album which the band recorded was called Nevermind. “Smells like teen spirit” was in this album. So although the album didn’t gain much popularity the single did. Now the third album of the band and unfortunately the final one was called In Utero. In September of 1993 this album debuted, topping the Billboard 200’s. Now as the band was gaining success, Cobain’s addiction to heroin was growing at an alarming rate.
