Burning Man 2009 Festival

Burning Man 2009 festival between Aug. 31-Sept. 7 at the Black Rock Desert in Nevada.

Nevada has other things to offer, rather than the huge silver deposits, or Las Vegas with its gambling spots and strip clubs. So, do not restrict your self to the regular treats that this lively state has to offer. Venture out further and think about some self expression. If you have been yearning for self expression, then perhaps attending the Burning Man festival would be a good idea.

What makes it an amazing festival is the spectacular view that it provides. The serene climate, clear sky and the huge burning effigy in the middle of the desert, provides you with a marvelous sight, that you are hardly like to experience anywhere else.

It is interesting to find a simple act of radical self-expression by a bunch of enthusiasts, grow to such gigantic proportions, that it attracts thousands of people from all across the globe. The event got kick started in the year 1986, when Larry Harvey and Jerry James, along with a few of their friends gathered on the Baker Beach and set afire an 8-foot effigy of wood.

This act of burning a wooden effigy is believed to be associated with an earlier annual event, which was organized by Mary Grauberger, who was a sculptor, as well as a friend of Harvey’s girlfriend. When Mary stopped organizing the event, Harvey along with James took over and started what is one of the major tourist attractions of the region. Last year, the event attracted more than forty nine thousand visitors, who came to visit this grand display of light.

Held in the backdrops of the beautiful Black Rock Desert, the Burning Man is an event, which is organized by the Black Rock City, LLC. The exquisite display of lights is truly a treat to watch. The beautiful backdrop of sand, add to the beauty of the entire event.

One of the most “Standing” testimonies to the ever growing popularity of the event is that of the size of the effigy itself. The 8 ft structure grew into a 20 ft effigy in 1987, 30 ft in 1988, 40 ft in 1989, 48 ft in 1996, 50 ft in 1997, 52 ft in 1998, 54 ft in 1999, 70 ft in 2001, 80 ft in 2002, and last year it stood tall at a magnificent 84 ft.
